Visiting South Africa's Kruger National Park

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

July is the perfect time to visit South Africa's prime safari destination: The Kruger National Park. Located in the north of the country, this national park is home to some of Africa's most iconic wildlife.

July marks the peak of the dry season, when the bush is sparse and the grass is low. This is the best time for game viewing. While it is winter in this region, temperatures remain pleasant, averaging between 80°F (27°C) and 53°F (12°C), with low humidity.

During this season an abundance of wildlife gather around dams, rivers and waterholes, of which the Kruger has plenty. This incredibly biodiverse area is home to Africa's Big Five: Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Rhinos and the Cape Buffalo. The list of animals doesn't end there, guests can spot African wild dogs, black-backed jackals, giraffes, spotted hyenas, hippos and plentiful antelope, including the impressive kudu. Even cheetahs can be seen roaming the savannah-like grasslands.

Private areas such as Sabi Sands are famous for leopard sightings, and visitors have reported seeing two or three leopards in a day. Leopards are usually elusive creatures, however the expert guides know exactly how to provide a close up view of these stunning big cats.

Although this is an extremely busy time of year, a trip to the park won't disappoint. Those who want to avoid crowds can visit the north of the park, however the south offers a higher density of wildlife. For those seeking a more exclusive experience, there are a number of private concessions and reserves in the region. Sabi Sands and Timbavati, which are adjacent to the park come highly recommended, and are well-known for their luxurious lodges, along with the spectacular Singita Concession.

Guests in private reserves can enjoy activities such as night drives and walking safaris, which aren't on offer in the main park area.

With a wide variety of accommodation options, memorable safari experiences and beautiful landscapes, the Kruger National Park is a must-visit destination for safari-goers!
